Much of popular nature photography is either majestic landscapes or action shots of wildlife. I am a fan of both of those and shoot that myself however close-ups of foliage capture more of an impressionistic sense of how I experience nature. Neither film nor CCDs or CMOSes capture scent, a sense that eludes capture and reproduction, but when I see closeups of horsetails and grasses alongside a river, that is an image I can smell. What’s interesting in nature isn’t just the big picture or interesting fauna, it’s also the flora, the textures, the substrate.
